Google Still Lags Behind Apple in terms of App Revenue George June 27, 2014 Google, Research At Google’s I/O developer conference, it said it paid $5 billion to developers in the past 12 months. Analyst Jan Dawson charted out his estimate of what that looks like on a quarterly basis, and compared it to his estimates for payouts to developers from Apple. You can see that Google is quickly closing the gap on Apple but it still lags considerably. Google has 1 billion monthly active users on Android. Apple has about 500 million. With twice as many users, you’d think that Google should have a lot more revenue than Apple from app sales. The Wall Street Journal also reported today that Google is now retaining almost all of its 30% cut, as does Apple, rather than giving the majority to carriers as it once did. This, in turn, allows us to calculate Google’s revenues from Google Play as well.
