Finding a good law firm to work with is a tough ask, especially when you’re just starting out. One of the best approaches is to ask around – ideally from friends, colleagues and anyone you know who has done it before. Getting real, firsthand information from someone who has actually worked with a firm – and more importantly the individual lawyers within in – is invaluable.

JAGShaw Baker

This firm was cofounded by a good friend of mine, and long-time legal confidante, Tina Baker. Tina has over 20 years’ experience in the legal sector and she and the JSB Team are dedicated to and have worked across the entrepreneurial spectrum – representing entrepreneurs and venture capitalists alike. The 20+ team brings some incredibly deep – and balanced – experience to the table both in the US and the UK. You want that kind of insight when you’re looking around for a lawyer to get involved with your business. JAGShaw Baker has worked with numerous investors like Index Ventures and Atomico, as well as startups like Soundcloud.

Orrick, Herrington and Sutcliffe

Also known as just ‘Orrick’ this firm is also very involved in the London startup scene. Their lawyers don’t just sit behind a desk all day, they are also out there amongst the entrepreneurs, businesses and events. They understand what co-founders and companies need. One man to look out for here is Kolvin Stone, a partner in technology and intellectual property team. He knows his way around the London tech scene very well, and is a great person to reach out to.

The firm also runs a Total Access program (a series of talks and a very comprehensive blog) for startups, which involves all their major offices in London, Silicon, Valley and New York.

Taylor Wessing

Taylor Wessing is another firm worth mentioning, along with Chris Cooper. I know a lot of London entrepreneurs who speak very highly of the firm, and it certainly helps that they have a dedicated  Tech City Office in Shoreditch. Definitely handy.

If you’d like to get in touch to recommend more lawyers in London who you think should be mentioned here, then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
